Bon Voyage

Summer is a wrap here at Blueberry Haven, and I do believe all of us are sad to see it come to an end. However, we will be staying busy the next few months furiously making products for the holiday season.

We are excited to be unveiling some new blueberry items on our store shelves soon. Our staff did some sampling last week, and I heard many “oohs” and “ahhs,” letting me know they thoroughly enjoyed what they were tasting. Be sure to stop in soon and check out the new goodies in our blueberry collection. You definitely want to be first in line to try these yummy products!

Adding new blueberry items to our store is always fun, but I am also excited about taking a dream vacation with my husband. We celebrated our 25th anniversary this year, and we have always wanted to plan a special get away for just the two of us. We are leaving this week, and I can’t wait!

Coincidentally, I was talking to a friend about our vacation, and she reminded me that we will be gone on September 11. I have to admit that I hadn’t really thought about being gone on such a significant day, and I also couldn’t believe it has been 14 years since the events of September 11 occurred. I decided to share with my friend a story that always reminds me of that fateful day. Now, 14 years later, it is a good story—so I’ll share it here with you.

In March of 2001, I went with my mom and aunts to visit my cousin who was teaching at the American School of Cairo. We had a fantastic trip visiting the many beautiful sights in Egypt, including the pyramids, the Red Sea, the Tombs of the Kings, and the Nile River. I am still amazed at all the history in Egypt—it was a truly magnificent trip.

Of course we managed to squeeze in a little shopping, and I found sheik outfits to bring home to my boys. I remember being the most excited about this find because I thought they could wear them for Halloween that year. When I returned home, I had my boys put on the outfits, and they looked adorable in them. I was so proud of myself that I would be ahead of the game (for once) for their Halloween costumes. Flash forward to September 11 that same year (and Halloween in October), and no right-minded American would have dressed up their children as sheiks for any occasion! However, I had taken pictures of them in the outfits when I gave them the costumes after my trip, so I did have the pictures in my photo collection. Just recently, my son’s good friend who is of Egyptian descent wanted to see the pictures of the boys dressed as sheiks. So, I brought out the old photo books and found the pictures to show him. He smiled when he saw the boys dressed up in the costumes.

Looking back at that great trip recently made me even more excited to travel to another place I have never experienced before. I have heard there are many shops where we are traveling that make special jellies and sauces, and I am sure I will bring home some great ideas for Blueberry Haven!
